I sent home another needs list for the Homer Outdoor Education Trip.  Please make sure you have one.  It is important the students have a pair of binoculars for this trip.  I highly recommend either 7x35, 7x50, or 8x35, or 8x50.  These are optimal binocular specifications for beginners.

There is no memory verse this week.

We answered the kids question, "What will it be like in Heaven?"
Our study went through Revelation 21 and 22, as well as verses in Isaiah 65 and 66.

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar - We reviewed our understanding of complete and simple predicates today.

Writing - Kids are working on their self and peer editing for their Free Write papers.  There are a few who are finishing their rough drafts and some who are onto writing their final copies at this point.  The final draft is due this Friday.

We tested the teaching that you can see Jesus in every verse of Scripture by randomly picking out books chapters and verses

I met with everyone who turned in a rough draft to give them constructive criticism in writing their storylines.  There were those who haven't turned in a rough draft

Science:

We played a review game after answering all of the kids questions on their objectives.
There will be a chapter test tomorrow over Chapter 11

Social Studies:

I will be gone this Thursday and Friday, so instead of working on our Simulation this week, we will be working on learning the countries of the world, beginning with Asia.  Students will be receiving a map and learning the countries in small sections.  We will be going over memorization techniques that they can utilize to help themselves learn the many countries.

We are reading a book entitled High On Adventure III written by an acquaintance of mine, Stephen Arrington, former Delorean drug scandal fall guy who was converted in prison who then became the chief diver for the Cousteau society.

We finished answering the question "What if you break one commandment?"  We finished our study by concluding that although the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), the gift of God is eternal life  through the sacrifice of Jesus, as long as we confess our sins (1John 1:9) because He is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us.

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar - Identifying complete and simple subjects
              Our worksheet today dealt with Irish and Celtic myths, and we discussed human created mythology and compared it to God's truth.  In our discussion, we talked about how strange and demented man's substitutes for God's truth can be.
Writing -

Science:

We finished our objectives for Chapter 11 today and will be having our Test on Tuesday!!!

Social Studies:

Simulation day.  6 of the groups had to backtrack because their guide left them, so they are heading back downriver and hire a new guide.  Three groups made the correct choice on who to hire and have the correct guide.  They will have a much better chance of getting over the Rockies before winter sets in.

Language Arts: Reading

We Read The Giver until we only have a page and a half left.  The kids are dying to hear the end, and we will tomorrow!

We are learning about sound waves and their characteristics.  We are done with our vocabulary, and only have one more You Will Be Able To left until we are done with this chapter.  Our Test will be next Tuesday!!!

Social Studies:

Those students who chose to hire Running Deer and her husband as their guide to the Rockies just found out that they made the wrong choice.  Bird Woman's (Sacagawea's) companion ran away from the Mandan during Lewis and Clark's winter there, and so in the simulation, if they hired her, she ran away from them.  All parties who had chosen Running Deer chose to head back to the Mandan and lose valuable time to hire Bird Woman and her husband.

Bible:

Memory Verse - Acts 17:11
We are answering the kids' question of "What happens when you break one commandment?"  We defined sin from 1 John 3:4, defined which of the two laws the Bible references was being talked about, and then allowed Jesus to broaden the definition of sin in Matthew 5:21,22.  Today we qualified the definition of sin by using James 4:17 and Acts 17:30, then, assuming that we broke the commandment with full knowledge, used Romans 6:23 to discuss the penalty of breaking the law.  For the rest of the week, we will study God's forgiveness and sacrifice that buys us our lives!

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar - Complete and Simple Subjects
Writing - We are brainstorming and drafting our latest free write.  On this paper, we are focusing on our adjective and adverb usage, as well as using complex sentences for vary our sentence lengths.

Science:

We learned about the doppler effect on sound.

Social Studies:

 The kids have moved on from the Mandans and are now traveling through modern day Montana trying to reach the River that Scolds All Others, and the Great Falls.


Language Arts: Reading

We finished chapter 20 and today worked on a worksheet that helped us to analyze how what was going on would affect different parties in the book.  Such practice helps the students begin to intentionally analyze cause and affect, as well as practicing making predictions in their reading to help them become better readers.

I gave the students an opportunity to ask any question they wanted.  We are going to go through each of the questions and see what the Bible says.

Bible went long today as we worked on answering one of the Bible questions the kids had.

We got to one sentences to determine whether it was a compound subject, predicate, or sentence.  We then went

We reviewed #'s one and two of our objectives, and then answered vocabulary to temperature.

Social Studies:

Only one group has yet to make it to the wintering grounds with the Mandan, and the rest are ready to leave.

Bible:

Memory Verse - 2 Corinthians 13:2
We played a Bible game today to help us learn our Bible books.  The class is getting so good at their Bible books that we are having to reconfigure our games.  Now the students have to name the book that comes before the given book.

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar - We had a quick quiz on identifying parts of speech and compound sentences

Poetry.  Students have learned 5 different types of poems, and they are working on creating 3 original poems.  They will then finalize them in a neat and presentable final draft that will be turned in on Friday.

Science:

We discussed the different types of energy exemplified in a roller coaster ride.

Social Studies:

Simulation, kids have only two more rounds to complete their trading and move on from their winter camp

Language Arts: Reading

We read a chapter and 1/2 from The Giver and discussed the importance of God given free choice, as well as how choice may be messier because we make mistakes, but it is definitely better than servitude, where all our choices are made for us.

I have to apologize.  I said I would have the progress reports out by today, but they are sitting here on my desk not ready to distribute.  I am sorry, I got close, but was unable to get them out today.  They definitely will be coming home tomorrow.  Sorry for the delay and thank you for your patience.  

Bible:

Memory Verse - 1 Corinthians 13:2
We discussed the pattern of disbelief that pervades the Exodus story.  How God performs a miracle to deliver His people, and then the next time difficulty comes, then murmur and complain.

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar - We had a short quiz on creating compound sentences, compound subjects, and compound predicates.

Language Arts: Reading

We read 2 chapters out of The Giver today.  Within the context of the book, we discussed the theme of choice, or lack of choice, within the story.  We then correlated that to how God allows us to have free choice, and how love has to give choice.

Science:

Review potential and kinetic energy.


Social Studies:

Simulation, all but two of our groups are now wintering with the Mandan.  Kids had to make a choice to either winter with the chief Le Borgne or chief Black Cat.  THere are quite a few other decisions they will need to make as they winter over the next couple of rounds before setting out again in the Spring to search for the headwaters of the Missouri, and the path across the Mountains that are always white.

Math:

Lesson 72 all letters, but odd numbers

In our discussion about the 10 Plague to afflict Egypt, we got into a study on death and what happens at the end of the world.  We studies out of Revelation 20, Revelation 14, Malachi 4, Ezekiel 28, 1 Peter 3

Grammar -  Review of Compound Subjects and Sentences, and we learned and practiced compound predicates.

We are working on poetry and have learned about Haikus, Acrostics, Quatrains, and today we worked on Shape poems.

We are going over the 10 plagues from Exodus.  Today we went over 9 of them and tomorrow we will talk about the 10th plague

Language Arts: Writing

Grammar- We began working with teh concept of compound sentences today.

Writing -  We are beginning a poetry section and today we began with the Haiku.  Students wrote two haikus, one that made no sense but followed the 5-7-5 syllabication rule, and one that was a thematic haiku

Science -

We answered numbers 15 and 16 on our objectives today.  We will be finishing our objectives tomorrow and then having our Test on Thursday

Social Studies -

Most groups are within 300 miles of the Mandan villages, where they will be spending their first winter.

We are working on the proper usage of quotation marks and the associated punctuation.  The kids has three days to write 1/2-1 page of a "story" using the four basic rules of quotations that we talked about in class.  This will help me to see who is getting the concept and who isn't so I can help them accordingly.

Science:

We went over the items that affect an area's climate.

Social Studies:

Simulation today.  We are in the territory of the Yankton Sioux, the last 'friendly' tribe before they reach the Mandan village they will winter at.

Language Arts: Writing

Learning how to use quotation marks.  We have learned 4 basic rules to using quotation marks, and we were given 6 sentences for correct for quotation punctuation.  The students were allowed to use their quotation rules page.

They are also working on a 1/2-1 page snippet of quotations.  They are required to have a usage from each of the four rules.

Science:

Please remember to bring cardboard for our cloud identification panels.

We have finished our parts of speech, and this week we will be learning how to correctly punctuate quotations.  As the assessment for this section, we will be writing a 1/2 - 1 page paper of a conversation between people. This will require us to punctuate the quotations  correctly.

Science:

We began to answer #15 on our objectives, by reading page 273

Social Studies:

Lewis and Clark simulation day.  Most of the students have travelled around 500 miles although there are some stragglers.  They are halfway to their winter spot and it is toward the end of July.  Some have starved due to improper supplying, but most are doing well.  We are beginning to travel through the territory of the Yankton and Lakota Sioux.  Two groups got attacked by a grizzly bear.  Lewis and Clark are the first recorded encounter with a grizzly bear by anyone from the United States!

We worked on the skill of interpreting an author's foreshadowing by attempting to predict what we think will happen next in our book, The Giver.  To make a prediction, a student will have to supply some evidence from the text we have read that will support their prediction.

We played a Bible basketball game today to help us learn our Bible books

Language Arts: Writing

We are on the editing phase of the writing process.  That entails both self-editing and peer editing.  When those steps are done, it is time to write the final draft.  The final draft of this free write paper is due this Friday.
We are "playing" with Mad Libs as a way of assessing how well we know our parts of speech.  It is a fancy and fun way to quiz the kids so I can know how well they understand what we have gone over up to this point.

Science:

We are learning about weather and how to predict weather.

Social Studies:

The first round of travel in our simulation is in the books.  The students are learning about events that occurred during Lewis and Clark's journey, Native American tribes they encountered, and the never ending need for math to calculate the expenses, weight, and distance traveled during an excursion.

We worked some mad libs to assess our ability to use proper parts of speech, a fun way to do a quiz.

Kids should be on editing their rough drafts for their Free write paper.  They have two steps to editing, self and peer editing.  When they are done with these steps, they then can move onto writing their final drafts.

Science:

We are learning about weather patterns and what causes weather.

Social Studies:

Official day of traveling for our little Lewis and Clark groups!

Social Studies:

This was the first official day of our simulation.  Today the kids were trying to determine how many of each type of supply they wanted to buy.  We also discussed what some of the different items were that Lewis and Clark brought with them on their trip.

We are beginning our simulation about Lewis and Clark. The kids have been randomly broken up into groups and today I gave them some 'recommended' vocabulary words that they should look up.  There will be benefits to their groups within the simulation if they know these word.

We worked on identifying our parts of speech as we worked on our adverbs on a worksheet.
I handed out a rubric so the students can see what the grading elements of this free write paper are.  We had a bit of time to work on our drafting today.

We learned about Moses' trip back to Egypt today.  Within that story is a snippet about Zipporah, Moses' wife, circumcising her son to save Moses' life.  We discussed circumcision and what God meant by requiring circumcision of his followers.

Language Arts: Writing

We had brainstorming and drafting time
We are also working on identifying adverbs, adjectives, nouns and verbs.

Science:

We did not have science today so we could work on our review session for our Social Studies test

We learned about local winds and global winds and finished #10 and the vocabulary words sea breeze and land breeze on our objectives.

Social Studies:

 For our first review for our test on Friday, we worked on page 358 and 359:
            - Vocabulary - all problems
            - People and Places - all problems
            - Facts and Main Ideas - #1-4, answers written in complete sentences.
They had 30 minutes to do all this

Language Arts: Reading

We worked on a worksheet for our book, The Giver, where we learned and practiced how to use context clues to define the word defiant.
We are also learning how the author, Lois Lowry, uses her language to setting to create the atmosphere of the book, instead of telling the reader directly.
We also read from C.S. Lewis' book, The Horse and His Boy

Math:

Retake of yesterday's test for those who needed it.
The others had concept worksheets to work on for the day, and then free time that they had earned by doing well on the test the first time.

We are reading through the story of Moses and today we got to the burning bush.  We noticed the difference in the character of Moses since he has spent 40 years shepherding sheep.

Language Arts: Writing

Descriptive page was due today.

We worked on identifying adverbs.

Science:

Quick review of terms and concepts we have already gone over.

We read pages 263-264 and learned about winds, fronts, and global and local winds.

Social Studies:

We finished our objectives today.  The rest of the week will be spent reviewing and practicing writing essay answers.

We have learned that in the killing of all the firstborn Israelite boys, Satan showed his character.  In the salvation of Moses, God showed His.

Our descriptive scene writing is due on Tuesday.  We are working on Adverbs.  

Science:

We made observations of our sealed terrarium to help us learn about the Water Cycle.  
We also answered #7 of our objectives.

Social Studies:

Test this Friday on our chapter.
We went over pages 354-355 in class and the vocabulary words amendment and Bill of Rights.  All of our vocabulary is now complete.

This assignment will be for two days.

Social Studies:

Review of the 3 branches of government and the concept of checks and balances.  Going over objective #6

Language Arts: Reading

We began reading The Giver by Lois Lowry today.  This book is full of symbolism and has a very direct gospel presentation.  We will be reading this together as a whole class.  We had a pre-reading worksheet about the concept of rules entitled 'Do We Need Rules?'  We will use this worksheet to discuss why God has rules and what purpose they serve for our lives.
