1/27/16

Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-21
We played a Bible game today to help us learn our Minor Prophets from the Old Testament

Math:

Intermediate 5 - Lesson 69 all problems
Course 1 - Lesson 68 all problems

Science:

We went over a part of #7 on the objectives as we discussed the central and peripheral nervous system

Social Studies:

Trading simulation, we are finishing our simulation this Friday.

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 15 Day 3 & 4

Spelling- Spelling sentences for lesson 16, from the first 3 or 4 on the front side of the spelling list.

Reading- WE are reading Streams to the River, River to the Sea in class.  A story about Sacagawea, as well as the groups finishing their independent reading in class.

Grammar- Compound sentences, Compound Subjects and Predicates.  We are learning how to combine sentences to create more complex sentences and enhance our writing.

Writing- We had 30 minutes to work on our Weekly Writing today.  We talked about simple paragraphing and making sure our sentences were complete.  Nest week we will work on creating more complex sentences and varying sentence length

Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-21
Today we studied the altar of burnt offering and its symbolic meaning in regard to Jesus' ministry on earth.

Math;

Intermediate 5 - Lesson 68 all problems
Course 1 - Lesson 67 all problems
After Bible class today, we did not have enough time to do our timed tests.

Science:

Today we went over the central and peripheral nervous systems.  We also talked about what activities we can engage in, such as unstructured play, listening to classical music, and making decisions, that help increase dendrite growth.

Social Studies:

We finished yesterday's rounds of the trading simulation.

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 15 Day 2 & 3

Spelling- Lesson 17 worksheet

Grammar- Sentence Structure, identifying complete and simple subjects and predicates

Reading- Two groups have finished their reading, and are deciding what they would like to do as a summary activity.  The group reading Ruby Holler is reading 4 chapters a night to finish their book by mid next week.

Bible:

Memory Verse- Romans 12:9-21, this is our last week with Romans 12!!!
We talked about why we pray to God, and why it is important that He is love!

Math:

Intermediate 5- 9 times tables - Lesson 67 all problems
Course 1 - decimal multiplication - Lesson 66 all problems.

Science:

We will be having a quiz on Friday over what we have gone over so far in our chapter.  Today we went over the nervous system and a neuron.  This information will not be on the quiz.

Social Studies:



Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 16 Day 1 & 2

Spelling- Pre Test 17

Grammar- Identifying Complete and Simple Subjects and Predicates

Writing- Our three writing prompts for our weekly writing are as follows:
1 - If I won $1,000,000,000, I would ....
2 - Write about a time you were lost.
3 - Your dream house.

Reading-

Water Sky and Sign of the Beaver both should be done and need to turn in their reading note packet.

Ruby Holler is almost done and needs to be reading 4 chapters, they are very short, a night and still doing 3 reading notes per reading assignment.

PE:

We jumped rope for 2 min and 30 seconds straight for conditioning and foot speed work
Today we began learning about how to dribble and shoot a basketball.
For dribbling, we practiced a simple dribbling drill that requires us to dribble twice with each hand and then throwing a bounce pass to a partner.
In shooting, we are learning to use the backboard, and specifically the box on the backboard up close.  We then played a game of knockout to practice our shooting lessons, although under pressure it is hard to remember them!

Bible:

Memory Verse- Romans 12:9-20
We played a Bible game today to help the kids learn their Bible books.  They are getting good enough that when we play a tag game, it is hard to come up with books that they don't know the book that follows it!

Math:

Intermediate 5 - 8 times tables - Lesson 65 all problems
Course 1- decimal multiplication - Lesson 64 all problems
My two individuals have to do all the problems on their lesson today.

Science:

 We learned about ways to protect and take care of our skin / integumentary system.  We also discussed the importance of avoiding antibacterial soaps, and how important it is to wash your hands properly.

Social Studies:

Trading round 10.

Language Arts:

Handwriting- lesson 14 Day 2 & 3

Spelling- NO spelling this week.

Grammar- Learning to identify the complete subject of a sentence, as well as the implied you as the subject of an imperative sentence.

Writing- We had thirty minutes today to work on our drafting of our weekly writing.

Bible:

Memory Verse- Romans 12:9-20
We began studying the symbols in the Altar of Incense.  Today we learned what incense represents by reading Revelation 5:8

Math:

Intermediate 5 - 8 Times table - Lesson 64 all problems
Course 1 - Decimal times table - Lesson 63 all problems
I have two individuals who are reworking their last 10 lessons, and we took time to go over their lesson today, so they are required only to do the odd numbered problems, and correct tonight.

Science:

We reviewed the different systems we have gone over, and then began on the integumentary system, and the makeup of our skin.


Social Studies:

We worked on part of a round of our simulation

Language Arts:

Handwriting - Lesson 14 Day 1 & 2

Spelling - No spelling this week because it is a short week

Grammar- Taking sentence fragments and making complete sentences.

Writing- We are taking longer this week with our weekly writing, and I am meeting with each student to give them one or two things to work on that I saw in last week's writing.  I have added writing in complete sentences as a grading element this week.

We played a Bible game today because I forgot to make the proper photocopies prior to class.

Math:

Intermediate 5, Course 1 - Investigation 6
Those who needed to retook yesterday's math test

Science:

We reviewed the sense organs we have already studied, diagrammed the sense of smell and began learning about the integumentary system and the sense of touch

Social Studies:

Trading Simulation Round 8 - everyone failed to plan ahead and get furniture for last round, so everyone is in at least the first phase of penalty

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 14 Day 4

Spelling- Sentences for Lesson 16, second 3 or 4 words

Grammar- Working on being able to identify the two parts of any sentence, the subject and the predicate

Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-19
We played a Bible game today to help us learn our Bible books

Math:

Both levels took math test 11 today.  There will be a retake tomorrow for those students who feel they need one.

Science:

Due to the amount of time it took for the Math test today, we were not able to have a significant science class.  We reviewed what we have gone over so far.

Social Studies:

Trading simulation round 7

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 14 Day 3&4

Spelling- First 3 or 4 sentences of Lesson 16

Grammar- Identifying sentences worksheets 3

Reading- We journaled about our reading notes.

Writing- We spent 10 minutes drafting.  The expectation was set on Monday both verbally, and in a grading rubric given to the students that they double space their rough drafts.  Some students chose to not listen to that instruction and are having to choose between getting a low grade on their rough draft or rewriting it.  This is a good life lesson about paying attention to instructions.

PE:

We worked on our jump roping skills today, then we played an extended game of dodge ball.

Bible:

Memory Verse- Romans 12:9-19
We went over the symbolic meaning of the lampstand in the tabernacle in the wilderness and how the pure gold lampstand gives off light. (Ps. 119:105; John 9:5) We also discussed how this light reflected off of the other furnishing we have studied in the holy place, the table of showbread, and how that is symbolic of a Christian shining Jesus to the world around them.

Math:

Intermediate 5 - 7 times tables - Lesson 63 - Test tomorrow
Course 1 - Dividing fractions - Lesson 62 - Test tomorrow

Science:

After reviewing the senses of sight and hearing, we diagrammed the sense of taste today
Social Studies:

We are continuing our trading simulation today.

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 14 Day 2 & 3

Spelling- Create your own worksheet day for Lesson 16!  This allows the kids to create worksheets that enhance their learning styles.

Grammar- Identifying sentences fragment worksheets -

Writing- Some students typed their weekly writing from last week, and then we all worked on our weekly writing assignments from this week.

Reading- Students need to read their required chapter(s) at home tonight and do 3 reading notes.

Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-19
We began to discuss the lampstand of the sanctuary today and what it means symbolically.
Understanding symbolic meanings and how to use them appropriately is an important developmental stage for pre-teens.

Math:

We will be having a test tomorrow for both math levels
Intermediate 5- 7 times tables, Lesson 62 all problems
Course 1 - dividing fraction practice - Lesson 61 all problems.

Science:

 We are continuing to go over our senses.

Social Studies:

Trading simulation continues. We will be doing this simulation for one more week, and then we will be moving into the French and Indian War, and the rise of George Washington.

Language Arts:

Handwriting-  Lesson 14 Day 1 & 2

Spelling-  Lesson 16 Pre-Test

Grammar -We are learning to identify different types of sentences: Declarative, Exclamatory, Interrogative, and Imperative

Reading -  Students are to read tonight.

Writing - We handed in our weekly writing from last week, and began a new one this week.  Our three prompt choices are:

1. Have you ever had something 'bad' happen to you that turned out to be good?

2. Name what you consider to be the one invention that has most affected your life, and how.

3. If you could have lunch with any person from history, who would it be and what would you ask them?

We are studying our senses, and will be dissecting cow eyeballs tomorrow in class.

Social Studies:

We are participating in a Trading simulation between the American colonies, Africa, the European powers, and China

Spelling- Lesson 15 Last 3 or 4 sentences

Grammar- Identifying Adverbs and the words they modify

Writing- We worked on the editing process,  there were some students who typed their papers in the upstairs computer lab.

Course 1 - Multiplying decimal numbers - Lesson 59 all problems

Science:

We began to learn about our nervous system and the accompanying senses.  We will be dissecting cow eyeballs on Friday!  Please see previous blog entries if you or your student have any issues with doing the dissection

Social Studies:

Trading simulation round 2.  Kids are learning how the colonial economy worked, how England kept the colonies in economic subjegation.  They are also learning the basics of how a free market economy works.

Language Arts:

Handwriting- Lesson 13 Day 3&4

Spelling- Sentences for the first 3 or 4 words

Grammar- Adverb worksheet #3 working on identifying adverbs and the words they modify

Reading-

Writing- 15 minutes to work on our Weekly Writing.  We are learning to edit our work.

We began going over the furnishings in the tabernacle in the wilderness to seek symbols and lessons that God is trying to teach.

Course 1 - We are timing multiplying decimals numbers - Lesson 58 all problems

Science:

We reviewed what we went over prior to break in an attempt to refresh our memories

Social Studies:

We did round 1 for our trading simulation today.

Language Arts:

Spelling- Worksheet 15

Grammar- Adverb worksheet # 2, Adverbs modifying verbs.

Reading-

Writing- We worked on our weekly writing and practicing our self-editing skills.

We began practicing jumping rope for the Jump Rope for Heart activities over the next three weeks.

Science:

We are reorienting ourselves with our science chapter.  Later this week, we will be dissecting cow eyeballs in class.  If this is something that your student does not want to participate in, please have them come talk to me about an alternative assignment.

Social Studies:

We began our new simulation by breaking up into our groups and getting our instructions for it today.  It will be a simulation about the Triangle of Trade that occurred in the mid 18th to early 19th centuries.

Language Arts:

We are working on identifying adverbs within a sentence.

Writing-

We are beginning to do weekly writing assignments.  I will give the students three prompts that they may choose from to write a one page paper about.  They will have 15 minutes every day to write and the assignment will be due on Friday each week.
