Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-17
We read the story of the Jesus and the fig tree in Matthew 21:18-20.  The kids are using a concordance to attempt to find symbols for the elements of the story and see a spiritual meaning within the story to understand why Jesus cursed the fig tree.
This is in accord with Jesus teaching in parables.

Progress Reports: Progress Reports came home today, please sign and return the yellow form.
I have to apologize for two mistakes.
On the Math progress report, lesson 45 has a total points possible of 301.  It should only be 30, and that would affect any grade if assignments have been turned in.
On English, there is one assignment that is miscategorized as a paper, and it should not be.

Bible:

Memory Verse - Romans 12:9-17
We are continuing to learn how to use a Strong's Concordance to learn how to do a topical study in our Scriptures.  To do this, we are looking at words in Scripture and attempting to identify symbols for them so that we may understand deeper meanings within different Bible stories, much as Jesus did when he taught using symbols and stories.

Math:

Times Test 4
Finishing Investigation 5

Science:

We took longer on math today than I had planned, so I focused on Social Studies after recess.

Social Studies:

We had a class discussion about why Freedom of the press is important.  We also read about John Peter Zenger, and how his case of 'seditious libel' against the Governor of the New York Colony was the first push for freedom of the press in the colonies.

We are planning on aiming for a Social Studies Test on this Friday.

Language Arts:

Spelling- We worked on sentences for our 21 words, which this week are homonyms.  The kids only need to know how to spell the words, and which homonym is used in which situation.  They will NOT need to memorize the definitions, but they will need to know the definitions to choose the correct word during the spelling test because the words will be presented to them  out of order, and with different sentences,

Reading -

Ruby Holler - Alex, Paige, Caitlyn, Leily, Danniel, Taylor
Read 3 chapters a night with three reading notes total

Sign of the Beaver - Savannah, Evan, Colton, Jordan, Kaiden, Roman
Chapters will vary per night, with more chapters per night early in the book because                               they are shorter. 3 reading notes.

Water Sky- Jonathan, Emily, Jeremiah, Brayden, Megan
Read 1 chapter and 3 reading notes

Christmas Decoration Time:

As a class, we have brainstormed many different ideas of how we would like to decorate our classroom, and then we voted on the top four that did not interfere with each other.
I have allowed the kids to choose what decoration group they would like to be a part of, and have given them 'free' reign to figure out how to make their ideas a reality.  Some are finding their ideas difficult, while others are moving ahead with abandon.  It is fun to watch the kids attempt to turn their visions of these decorations into reality, all the while working with others who may have a different viewpoint.  These are great social skill learning experiences.

Kadin is still in the hospital, so Mrs. Melony Coleman is substituting for me today,

Here are my notes for her:

8:00-8:15 Mini- Worship

8:15-9:45 – Bible
I usually begin by reviewing the kids memory verse : Romans 12:9-13
If God inspires you to share anything or if there is an aspect about these verses that jumps out at you, please feel free to share with the kids. It is important to help them see the verses as more than just something to memorize, but rather something to learn from.

It is Bible Game day. I allow the kids to volunteer games to play, and then they can let you know how we go about choosing a game. If they choose Bible Hide and go seek tag downstairs, please make sure the ground is safe, have the students clean up prior to playing, and they are into using mats, ask them for our rules about using mats to remind everyone what is safe and what is not.

Times Test 21
Have the students tell you the trick to be able to do this times table
Worksheets are on the desk

Lesson 42

10:25-11:05 Science:
I have a worksheet for the kids to work on. They will find the answers on pages 99 and 100 of their Science books.
It is likely that they may not get finished during the allotted class time, but that is OK. We will finish tomorrow..
11:05-11:45 Social Studies

Begin with a colony map work . The map is on the desk. Give them a little bit of time, 5 minutes or so, to fill out the map. Then correct with them. No need to collect this.

If they did not finish yesterday's assignment, please give them time to do that. I'm not sure how clear yesterday's assignment was for them. I will repeat it here, if they are done, then please ignore this and move on to what follows:

Read pages 178, 179, & 180 – Please complete Objective vocabulary Roger Williams, dissenter, William Penn, James Oglethorpe, & debtor
After the vocabulary, please work on #1. It is important for them to understand the compare means what is similar and contrast means what is different. I would encourage them to create a table to do this.
If working on #1 is too difficult for them to complete the work on #1, let them know we can review and go over it tomorrow.

If they are done with that, please have them all get a piece of lined paper and turn to page 182 of their book. Please make sure they write their name on the top of the paper and answer questions 2, 3, 4, & 5 in the section entitled Review.

If they get done early, you can play a geography game with them. They can tell you how they play it.

There is an area out front around the church sign that we can play in. The kids choose a game of tag to play, they have also enjoyed soccer, but this would not be a good area to play that due to the closeness to the main road.

2:55 – 3:10

Carol agreed to take care of the kids at this time, so you can get to after care. Again, thank you so much for taking this for me so I can be with Kadin.

We worked on how to write out our notes in preparation for writing an essay question.  Tomorrow we will be practicing writing our answer to the essay question.

Social Studies:

Each colony was working on creating a name, a standard, and a detailed colonization plan so they can approach the Honourable East India Company to apply for a loan to colonize the New World.  Once they have their name and standard, they are then able to claim a space within the classroom for them to occupy.  This particular phase always causes some difficulty because the students get to choose whether their claims get to last the whole day, or only during simulation time.  This is good social skills learning time as they learn to resolve disagreements and create rules for coexistence.

Language Arts:

Handwriting - We will not be having any handwriting until next week.  We have finished our practice and will be starting our real work on Monday.

Spelling -  The second half of our sentences.  Three if we are in 5th grade and four if we are in 6th grade

Grammar - We are working on identifying common and proper nouns, specifically within a sentence.

Reading -  We read a chapter out of Summer of the Monkeys and continued learning how good readers read.

Writing -  Our writing assignment is to create an advertisement for a product, real or imaginary.  To do so we will be working on using 'exciting' nouns and adjectives to promote our product!  Today the kids got their rubric for what my expectations are, and a mind mapping tool to help them organize their thoughts and ideas.

Music:  The students had music today.
